Colombian music icons Aterciopelados will perform a special concert at the United Nations General Assembly Hall on October 23rd as part of “United Nations Day.” The United Nations and non-profit organization Culture Project present a “Tribute To Peacekeeping” concert as Aterciopelados will join artists like Harry Belafonte, Roberta Flack and Angelique Kidjo to celebrate the anniversary of the 1945 charter of the United Nations. Most recently, Aterciopelados returned home to Bogota after their first-career tour of Australia.

Aterciopelados will play several songs at this prestigious concert including their human rights anthem “The Price Of Silence.” The Amnesty International benefit track was re-worked from the Aterciopelados hit “Cancion Protesta,” originally off their Latin Grammy-winning album ‘Oye.’ “The Price of Silence” was released last winter by Nacional Records, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The song’s music video was virtually simulated in the U.N. Assembly Hall and features Aterciopelados with artists like Julieta Venegas, Stephen Marley and Natalie Merchant.

Amnesty International USA sponsors Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival Aterciopelados to perform on Saturday August 29th on behalf of Amnesty International.

(Chicago) – Amnesty International USA will be sponsoring the City of Chicago’s Mayor’s Office of Special Events annual Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival this year on August 29th and 30th. Amnesty International will be raising awareness on two of their priority campaigns; The Women of Atenco and Immigrant Detention. The women of Atenco were brutally abused, mentally and physically by the police in San Salvador Atenco Mexico in May of 2006 after participating in a peaceful peasant protest. Some are still facing charges. Amnesty International is demanding that the Mexican government investigate the crimes committed against these women by the police and hold the guilty accountable. The AIUSA staff and volunteers will be asking guests to sign petitions to Lic. Felipe De Jesus Calderon Hinojosa calling for an effective and impartial investigation into the torture, and federal criminal prosecution for those responsible.
The AIUSA staff will also be discussing their immigration report, focusing on immigrant detention. Attendees of the festival will have the opportunity to get involved in Amnesty International’s worldwide activism by signing petitions at the festival, as well as joining the Amnesty International movement as members.
On Saturday August 29th, The Colombian rock band Aterciopelados will close out the day by performing on behalf of Amnesty International USA. Aterciopelados speaks out on a myriad of issues ranging from political injustice to women’s rights and environmental causes.

Nature and environmental themes dominate "Rio,'' the latest album by eclectic Colombian band Aterciopelados. So it was fitting that the first few numbers the quintet played Thursday night at the State Theater just rippled pleasantly. Then singer-guitarist Andrea Echeverri shed her bulky white jacket, and the mood became livelier.

Aterciopelados ("the velvety ones'') didn't revisit the early '90s, when they played punk and hard rock. They didn't even allocate much time to their more recent forays into electro-lounge. The set emphasized the mode of "Rio'' -- jangly Latin folk-rock with rhythms that straddled from the Caribbean to the Andes. Songs began with synthesized burbles, Afro-Cuban syncopation or guitar fanfares in the styles of either Carlos Santana or the Edge. But such elements were soon absorbed into the loping whole, and overwhelmed by Echeverri's hearty, penetrating alto.

If such jaunty pop-rockers as "Bolero Falaz'' sounded more like Liverpool than Bogota, the dominant accent was still Latin, with a new tilt toward jazz. Andean pan flutes produced both traditional bird-like tones and free-jazz squawks, and such midtempo tunes as "Aguita'' showcased Echeverri's torch-singer potential.

"Aguita'' is actually a protest of the privatization of water resources, and Echeverri is known for political lyrics. The singer drew cheers when she adorned her guitar with a "No Mas'' sticker from a campaign targeting violence against women, and when she introduced "Cancion Protesta,'' a song the band remade for an Amnesty International project. Aterciopelados's music may sound more easygoing these days, but it's still pointed.

Canción Protesta, the album Oye, of Aterciopelados (Colombia) was adapted to create "The Price of Silence", a special edition to benefit Amnesty International.
In addition to Venegas, Merchant, Echeverri and Hector Buitrago, "The Price of Silence" includes more than 12 artists from various parts of the world, some of which have experienced human rights violations such as the Sudanese rapper Emmanuel Jal, who was a child soldier, and the South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela, who spent years in exile during the era of racial segregation in his country.

The video was filmed in Bogota, Paris, London, Miami, Los Angeles and South Africa, there are artists in an animation of the Assembly of the Organization of the United Nations in New York, was presented by actor Laurence Fishburne and premiere in the events celebrating the 60th anniversary in several countries.

All funds raised through the sale of the song and the video will go to Amnesty International

Singing en español, clear-voiced Andrea Echeverri ponders subjects like immigration ("Bandera") and pregnancy ("28"), projecting unflappable confidence. Meanwhile, the band adds a slew of spiffy touches, including rowdy flute on "Día Paranormal" (shades of Jethro Tull), the eerie synth-plus-twangy guitar cocktail of "Vals," and the loping Johnny Cash beat on "No Llores," a toe-tapping study in cultural cross-pollination.

Colombian alt-rockers Aterciopelados audaciously and convincingly reinvent themselves like no one's business. On their seventh LP, "Rio," the garage punks turned trip-hopsters turned folk-rock fusionistas musically sound like an amalgam of themselves. Weepy surf guitars, ethereal spacy electronica, the Andean charango (a 10-string mandolin made from an armadillo shell), rain sticks and even the trickling sounds of the Bogota River make cameos.

Lyrically, though, they've never sounded more responsible -- parenthood tends to do that. They champion immigrants, the environment and motherhood. It's not that firecracker lyricist Andrea Echeverri -- expecting her second child -- has newly found indignation. She's always been ornery. But this time, her spunkiness is cool, contemplative, mature and poetic, as well as unabashedly confrontational.

In song, Echeverri once threatened to slice an unfaithful lover's face with a razor and kill his mother. Now, she sarcastically howls on the feisty tune "Bandera": "Who are you? Where were you born? You are the conquered, not a conquistador. You're not allowed to dream of a better life." Only in Spanish, it's full of alliteration and rhyme.

On the title track, she sings: "The river waters come running, singing through the city -- dreaming of being cleaner, clearer." And on "Treboles," she declares, "God bless our wombs, bring purity to our minds" -- this from someone who once sang, "I won't ruin my silhouette with no baby."

Rolling Stone has praised Aterciopelados highly-anticipated new album, 'Río', a week before its October 21 st release. It is an impassioned, socially conscious record with the group's signature organic rock sound.
The album's opener and first single is the title track, a call to action that finds Aterciopelados at a new level of creativity and musicality. It coincides with a proposed Colombian constitutional referendum that declares the country's bodies of water deserve basic rights. "When I was growing up, the Bogotá River was considered a mythic and iconic place, and now it's a tiny stream," says singer Andrea Echeverri. "Musically and lyrically, the track 'Río' is unlike any previous Aterciopelados song. I'm even singing in a different way than in the past. With this one, we reached an entirely new place."
Aterciopelados plan to tour the U.S. in support of 'Río' in early 2009, following the recent birth of Andrea Echeverri's second child. The band completed a European tour this past summer with her pregnant belly proudly displayed.
The longtime creative relationship between Echeverri and Buitrago proves to be the source for the Aterciopelados' musical genius. "We have had quite a musical career, which has evolved over the years through our own identity search and experimentation, finding our own sound," Echeverri says. Lejos del bullicio de la Gran Manzana y concentrado solamente en su próximo disco, que saldrá al mercado en septiembre, Héctor Buitrago, integrante de Aterciopelados, habló en exclusiva con People En Espanol en un estudio de grabación de Manhattan, donde se ultiman los detalles de su nuevo material.

Con la sencillez de siempre y cargado de un morral de expectativas, el músico colombiano nos contó la preocupación del grupo por el medio ambiente, especialmente por un río muerto que atraviesa su ciudad, nos dijo cómo vive su embarazo Andrea Echeverri y negó rotundamente que haya planes de separarse, pues afirmó que todavía “hay Aterciopelados para mucho rato”.

¿En qué anda Aterciopelados por estos días?

Bueno, pues ahorita estamos haciendo las mezclas de nuestro próximo disco que se llama Río y que sale en septiembre, y la verdad estamos muy contentos con el resultado que estamos viendo, pues deja ver de nuevo que seguimos en una búsqueda en la que tratamos de encontrar más cosas de nuestras raíces y esas influencias que siempre están presentes. Además, como siempre, es un disco ecléctico en el que hay canciones que no se parecen entre sí. También mostramos un poco del rock tradicional y hay fusiones con instrumentos de oriente y varios ritmos de Colombia e incluso tenemos varios invitados que son expertos en música folclórica.

Y esta vez ¿qué es lo que mueve al disco?

Uy, es ante todo, un disco que está más orientado hacia la naturaleza. Queremos que tenga ese sentido más ecológico y de alguna manera queremos que sea más práctico, algo que vaya ligado con campañas ambientales y básicamente con la recuperación de recursos importantes.

¿Por qué lo bautizaron con el nombre “Río”?

Pues porque habla de la problemática de un río de nuestra ciudad que es el río Bogotá y nos preocupa mucho. Es un río que atraviesa la capital de Colombia de lado a lado, donde vivimos casi 10 millones de personas y aunque está contaminado y prácticamente muerto, nadie hace nada concreto para ayudarlo. La canción tiene que ver con el olvido de los habitantes. Es un poquito como tomar conciencia de que el río está para ayudarnos, para alimentarnos, para bañarnos y lograr que el río no se quede solamente en la canción.

Además del río, ¿con qué más llega esta vez Aterciopelados?

Bueno en nuestro nuevo disco, tenemos otras canciones que también hablan del agua, otras hablan de la tierra y el medio ambiente, pero además están presentes temas como el amor, el humor y hay un tema que se llama “Ataque de risa”, que es un juego de palabras de los niños y en esa canción participa Milagros, la hija de Andrea y otros niños en los coros.

Muchas de sus canciones son satíricas, ¿qué tan importante es el humor para los colombianos y cómo lo usa Aterciopelados?

Pensamos que el humor es algo que está presente en todo lo que hacemos, porque es precisamente por el hecho de estar en situaciones tan difíciles que hay que sobreponerse y no hay mejor manera de sobreponerse a ese drama que se vive en Colombia, que el humor. Los chistes, la fiesta, el baile y esas cosas alegres en medio de las cosas tristes, creo que son los que nos ayudan a hacerle frente y a sobrellevar nuestras problemáticas.

Sabemos que Andrea está embarazada, ¿cómo vive esa experiencia y cómo la mezcla con el trabajo?

Bueno, sí, ella tiene ya seis meses de embarazo y está muy feliz con su esposo, Manolo, por la llegada de un hermanito para su hija, Milagros. Hemos estado trabajando normalmente, pero este mes haremos el último par de presentaciones y no más porque ella necesita cuidarse.

Hay algo que quisieras decirle como dato especial a los usuarios de PeopleEnEspanol.com?

Bueno, les digo que el próximo mes ya empezarán a escucharnos de nuevo con nuestro primer sencillo y además oirán una canción que hace parte de la banda sonora de una película colombiana que se llama La Milagrosa, que habla sobre el tema del secuestro y en la que también participa Juanes con su música. Además les digo que tanto Andrea como yo también seguimos trabajando en otros discos propios.

¿Por qué, acaso piensan separarse?

No, para nada, lo que pasa es que son avances que ambos tenemos y puertas que se abren. Tanto ella como yo ya lo hemos hecho antes y nos permite explorar más caminos, y eso nos ayuda porque cuando nos volvemos a encontrar, llegamos a otro tipo de sonido. Afortunadamente hay muchas ganas y Aterciopelados sigue ahí, trabajando duro y sin pensar en disolverse como algunos habían pensado.

"Con este disco nos hemos concentrado más en lo ecológico que en lo político", comenta Héctor Buitrago, del dúo Aterciopelados, cuyo nuevo disco "Río" está a la venta desde hace varios días.

Aterciopelados se ha sumado a un referendo que pretende cambiar la constitución colombiana y agregar "el derecho al agua, lo cual significa que los ciudadanos tenemos derecho de exigir el tratamiento y la calidad de nuestras. En un momento en el que el planeta está padeciendo y que nos está diciendo que está a punto de colapsar tenemos que tomar consciencia y, nosotros como artistas tenemos la responsabilidad social de ser eco de las necesidades de las personas. De hecho, nosotros navegamos el río Bogotá como muestra de nuestro interés por salvar este elemento vital que es el agua", asegura Buitrago.

A nivel musical esta producción integra, nuevas sonoridades que refleja "una investigación profunda, más ancestral, más indígena. Hemos recogido sonidos que vienen de una música más devocional que se deriva de una conexión más directa con la tierra", dice el músico colombiano quien califica su producción anterior "Oye" (2006) como un disco de transición "que nos trajo hasta Río".

De esta producción se desprenden temas como "Paranormal", "Tréboles" y "Bandera", tema compuesto por Andrea Echeverri, la otra mitad de la banda, dedicado a los inmigrantes.

En cuanto al proceso creativo del dúo, Buitrago asegura que piensan "en aspectos técnicos como dónde vamos a grabar, pero jamás hemos tenido presión en cuanto a la producción en sí misma se refiere."

"Cada uno de nosotros escribe sus temas por separado y, luego nos juntamos para ver qué vamos a hacer. Andrea compone con guitarra y voz, yo trabajo más la parte de producción, pero creo que hasta ahora lo más importante ha sido buscar y encontrar el equilibrio."

El milagro de Aterciopelados es que respaldan su mensajes con música hermosa y contagiosa. Lo último de la banda de Héctor Buitrago y Andrea Echeverri, "Río", no es una excepción. Es una declaración antiguerra y un ruego para proteger el medio ambiente, especialmente el tema que da nombre al álbum, sobre el contaminado río Bogotá. Pero también es una presentación exquisita de la naturaleza en todas sus formas (lluvia, relámpagos, risas, amor incondicional y hasta el simple placer de abrir una caja de galletas). Hay una mezcla de himnos estridentes y percutivos ("Gratis", "Madre", "Hijos de Tigre") pero también hay material más melódico ("Tomate", "Aguita").
